Mission and Strategy
Sampo Group aims to create value for its shareholders by flexibly utilizing opportunities arising in the market to create shareholder value through such transactions as disposals and acquisitions.
Sampo Group's business areas are P&C insurance and life insurance. The Group is also a significant investor on the Nordic scale. The business areas have well-defined strategies, based on return on equity targets. Synergies between P&C insurance and life insurance are minor.
P&C insurance operates under the If brand. If is the largest Nordic P&C insurer with a market share of over 20 per cent. Operations are focused on maintaining high profitability rather than increasing market share. The company also commands a strong position in the rapidly growing Baltic insurance markets and its market position and size provide it with advantages in terms of cost efficiency, superior underwriting and geographical diversification.
Mandatum Life operates in Finland and all of the Baltic countries through its subsidiary. Mandatum Life's operations are divided into two different kinds of businesses; new sales are focused on unit-linked insurance while most of the technical reserves relate to with-profit policies. Mandatum Life has a market share of approximately 20 per cent in Finland and a market share of over 10 per cent in the Baltic life insurance market.
Sampo plc manages the investment portfolios on behalf of the insurance subsidiaries. Sampo plc is also a major shareholder in Nordea, the Nordic banking group.
