Mandatum

Mandatum offers services in wealth management, asset management, rewards and personal insurance. Mandatum Group consists of two business areas: life insurance and asset management.

Mandatum Life Insurance Company

Together with the other Mandatum Group companies, Mandatum Life offers its customers comprehensive services for preparing and prospering, including unit-linked insurance and the related wealth management, investment services, personal insurance, pension and reward solutions for companies, as well as related consultation services.

Mandatum Life’s main area of operation is Finland, where the company has 300,000 private customers and 20,000 corporate customers. In addition, Mandatum Life operates in all of the Baltic countries.

Mandatum Life’s operations focus on the sales of unit-linked insurance policies and related wealth management, and personal insurance. In 2020, Mandatum Life’s total market share of direct insurance was approximately 26 per cent. Mandatum Life employs approximately 500 “your money, your life” professionals.

Mandatum Life actively develops its digital services, thanks to which the company can serve its existing and new customers even more efficiently.

The focal point of Mandatum Life’s new sales business is unit-linked insurance, such as group pension insurance and capital redemption contracts, personnel funds and insurance covering personal risks. For these, Mandatum Life has its own sales channels in Finland: sales groups specialised in corporate sales, wealth managers focused on wealth management customers and customer services that focus on managing the existing clientele and on additional services. Mandatum Life mainly operates in Finland and in the Baltic countries.

Continuous development of the customer service experience is one of the company’s focal points, and an increasing number of Mandatum Life’s private customers and the personnel of companies also receive service through digital channels. Mandatum Life actively develops its digital services, thanks to which the company can offer its existing and new customers even more diversified and efficient services.

Services for corporate customers and entrepreneurs a strong strategic focus

Corporate clients are at the heart of Mandatum Life’s customer strategy, and the company’s goal is to strengthen its position as Finland’s largest life and supplementary pension insurer in the corporate segment.

Mandatum Life offers companies a broad range of services related to personnel rewards and incentives, such as supplementary pensions and personnel funds, as well as the related consultation and risk insurance. For entrepreneurs, Mandatum Life offers comprehensive services in preparing and prospering both personally and through their companies.

In Mandatum Life’s view, personnel’s work ability and motivation have a major impact on the company’s bottom line. Employee rewards and compensation are an integral means of concretizing common goals and following up on them. Mandatum Life also expects that the need for Finns to secure their income during retirement will increase further in the coming years.

Employees who are insured through companies and are covered by the reward and incentive models create an excellent target group for Mandatum Life’s other services.

A broad offering of wealth management services

Mandatum Life provides private investors and companies with a wide range of wealth management and investment services.

Mandatum Group makes its investment expertise and its position as a major investor available to all of its customers. Mandatum Group’s investment solutions are managed by Mandatum Asset Management’s investment professionals.

This co-investing strategy approach means that, through Mandatum Life, customers have access to investments that are part of the Group’s successful proprietary balance-sheet investment operations.

These investments are often alternative investments falling outside the traditional asset classes. Co-investing is concretely present both as direct investments and as part of Mandatum Life’s customer mandates, allocation and pension products. Co-investing is available to private wealth management customers and companies, digital wealth management customers and other customers in unit-linked services, e.g. pension insurance.

Management of the with-profit insurance portfolio

In terms of Mandatum Life’s with-profit insurance portfolio, the company’s strategy is to maintain a sufficiently strong solvency position, which makes it possible to seek a higher long-term investment return than that offered by low-risk fixed income instruments. The goal is to actively accelerate the downward trend of the with-profit portfolio. The declining insurance portfolio and the Solvency II transitional provisions will enable the company to carry out effective capital management also in the future.

Mandatum Life’s result consists of three components: the investment result, the risk result and the expense result. In the expense and risk results, Mandatum Life seeks growth through both higher operational efficiency and volume growth.

Mandatum Asset Management

Mandatum Asset Management is an asset management company formed by combining Sampo Group’s and Mandatum Life’s investment operations.

Mandatum Asset Management engages in fund business and provides Sampo Group with discretionary and consultative wealth management and asset management services. The company manages Sampo’s, Mandatum Life’s and If’s assets. Mandatum Asset Management’s direct clients, in addition to Sampo Group, are Nordic and European institutional and Ultra High Net Worth Individual (UHNWI) clients. Other client segments are covered through selected distribution networks.

Mandatum Asset Management leverages Sampo’s investment heritage as one of the most successful institutional investors in the Nordic region by combining Mandatum’s cutting-edge client solutions with Sampo’s investment expertise into a growing asset management company.

Mandatum Asset Management offers discretionary and consultative wealth management and manages various investment strategies within the following core areas:

  • Credit: Mandatum Asset Management is a benchmark-agnostic credit investor and a forerunner within leveraged finance and loan investing, especially in the Nordic region and as a private debt investor globally. Credit investing has always formed the backbone of Sampo Group’s investment portfolio.
  • Alternatives: Mandatum Asset Management’s asset managers have over 30 years of experience in investing in alternatives, both through a combination of direct investing in our home markets and global fund selection.
  • Equity selection: Sampo has always believed in stock picking and has a strong track record of investing successfully in a concentrated portfolio of companies. Mandatum Asset Management’s activities include strategic investments, active ownership in SMEs and growth investments in private companies.

Mandatum Asset Management will manage around EUR 24 billion in assets and employ 100 investment professionals.
